Fat grafting, also called fat transfer, moves fat from one part of your body to your face. The fat is harvested gently with liposuction, purified, and placed in precise layers where volume has thinned. Because it is your own tissue, there is nothing artificial to reject or replace. A portion of the transferred fat becomes permanent.
Fat grafting suits patients who notice:
You need only a small amount of donor fat, so nearly everyone has enough.
Fat is harvested from the abdomen or thighs through tiny openings. Dr. Goel processes it carefully, then places it in fine, layered passes using blunt cannulas. Placement is everything. Small amounts in the right planes create smooth, believable contours instead of puffiness. Fat grafting is often combined with facelift, eyelid surgery, or performed on its own.
Expect swelling for one to two weeks, sometimes with mild bruising at the donor site. Most patients return to normal activity within a week. Final volume settles over about three months as the retained fat stabilizes.
Trained at the Keck School of Medicine of USC and Chief Resident at UC Irvine, Dr. Goel approaches volume the way he approaches everything: conservatively, in layers, with your natural anatomy as the guide.
The fat that survives the first few months is generally permanent. Dr. Goel plans for this, sometimes slightly overfilling to account for natural absorption.
Filler is temporary and great for testing a look. Fat is living tissue and lasts. Many patients start with filler and graduate to fat.
Usually the abdomen or thighs. The harvest is minor and many patients appreciate the slight slimming there.
